How to Treat Kidney Stones Effectively

If you are suffering from kidney stones, you will likely have experienced the pain that it entails. You do not have to suffer anymore as kidney stones can be treated effectively. In most cases, kidney stones will pass on their own in the urine without you noticing them; in some, it may involve pain, but once the stones have passed, you will feel relief. However, for larger stones, more than 5mm in diameter, you may need more medical intervention.

Natural Treatment

To remove kidney stones naturally, you need to 2-3 liters of water every day. The type of stones and size will determine how to approach treatment. Stones that are 4mm in diameter or smaller can pass in the urine without any medication at all. Medical Treatment

ESWL, or Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy, is the most common treatment used for kidney stones that are up to 20mm in diameter. After determining the exact location of the stones using x-ray or ultrasound imaging, the surgeon will use a machine that will send shock waves of energy at the stones to break them down. This process will make it easier for the patient to expel the stone fragments naturally in the urine.

PCNL

PCNL means Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy. It is used for larger stones, between 21mm and 30mm in diameter. The process uses a thin telescopic device called a nephroscope, which is inserted through a small incision in the back that leads to the kidney. The stone is then pulled out or broken into small fragments using pneumatic energy or laser so they can pass in the urine.

RIRS

When the stones are lodged in the ureter (muscular tube connecting the kidneys to the bladder), RIRS or Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery is often used. Commonly called ureteroscopy, the process involves inserting an ureteroscope through the urethra (tube that passes urine from the bladder to the outside of the body) towards the bladder and into the ureter where the stone is located. The stone is then gently removed using another instrument, or broken down using a laser so the stones can pass in the urine. This is an effective process for stones of up to 15mm in diameter.

Open Surgery

In rare cases, an open surgery may be required according to the size of the stone, location, and urgency of the situation. An incision is made in the back to gain access to the ureter and the kidney wherein the stone is removed.

Fall Gardening With Leaves And Mulch

Fall is ooh and aah time for peeping at leaves, the seasonal rock stars, in all their luscious glory.  Like one hit wonders, leaves lose oomph once they hit the ground. Leaves that fall on lawns are nasty little things to be raked up and disposed of, ASAP.  Lose their magnificence?  No!

Leaves as Mulch

The leaves you rake, put in a plastic or paper bag (you’ve paid for), or pay for a trash sticker to dispose of leaves.  These are helpful, garden money-savers. They are free mulch and they do the same job expensive bags of mulch do; they retain moisture in the soil. The added bonus is that they enrich the soil with nutrients. You can save money on chemicals and fertilizer. You can also save money on weed killers, because leaves help prevent weed growth.  They also insulate plants and help prevent soil erosion.

Mulching How-To’s

You may prefer to shred leaves, and you can do so with a lawnmower if you do not own a leaf shredder.  The shredding process ensures that the leaves let light through, and light is essential in any growing process.  Prepare the to-be-mulched soil by moistening it with water before you apply mulch.  Keep in mind, leaf mulch should be no deeper than 2 to 3 inches, though you can add to it in time.  One of the many benefits of mulch is that the inch amount eases the trauma of ground freezing and thawing, mainly the freezing and thawing that destroys root systems.  

There are a couple of leaf-mulching caveats. Do not apply mulch too early or soil will not warm sufficiently. Also do not apply too heavily, initially, if you live in an area where fall rains are the norm. You’ll lose the advantage of free watering.  Do not put leaf mulch too close to the plant’s base. This is a good piece of advice for any type of mulch. Lastly, next spring, mulched soil warms more slowly.   

When you use leaves to enrich garden soil, hoe the leaves directly into the dirt. The leaves decompose and make soil nice and loose. The process improves root growth when you plant next spring. You’ll use less water next year, because leaves naturally improve ground absorption.  Think of the springy texture of a forest floor, and you get the idea.   

Compost How-To

Making compost can be a part of fall gardening. Begin the compost process in September, and then let things brew over the winter, before spreading. Like mulching, shred leaves using a lawnmower with the blade 2 1/2 inches high, or of course, you can use a handy-dandy leaf shredder. Leaves should be mixed with some soil. All spring and summer add grass clippings, straw and even newspapers, if you only use sheets with black ink. Stir and moisten regularly.   

Many state landfills are banning yard waste, and as you can see, leaves and even grass clippings mistakenly fell into that category. We literally throw away not only money, but many other good things, when we toss out Mother Nature’s bountiful gifts.
